About the Composer

Tyler Kowal (b. 2001) is a composer pursuing a composition degree from the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music in Berea, Ohio. He studies composition with Dr. Clint Needham and euphonium with Dr. Ken Heinlein.

Tyler has premiered a number of works on Baldwin Wallace Conservatory's New Music Series concerts for various chamber ensembles and solo instruments. His recent orchestral work, An Elision of Light, was premiered by the Baldwin Wallace’s Symphony Orchestra. He has also had music performed by the Safety Second Duo and has written for the Kaboom Collective Orchestra. Tyler has received commissions from the Steven R. Gerber Trust and Andrew J. Buckley for his album Where We Go Next. Most recently, Tyler has been selected as the Canton Symphony Orchestra’s Composer Fellow for the 2022-23 season.

As an aspiring film composer, Tyler's music has always been centered around storytelling. He is always working to paint a picture with his music without the need for visual images. His music has also been known to include many musical themes and leitmotifs and occasionally reference his previous works to create sound worlds that feel connected and coexist in one single musical space.

After completing his undergraduate degree, Tyler plans to pursue film scoring in graduate school.
